My First Post
I am music obsessed but not a music critic. I have worked in the business side of music for many decades, mostly in marketing and commercial partnerships for a major.
We moved to East Nashville five years ago. I lived a lot of places for music biz jobs including stints in Chicago, Minneapolis, and 15 years in San Francisco and LA. But I have never lived anywhere with the musical talent and community of Nashville.
When I say Nashville, I am not necessarily talking about the pop country that is the biggest musical export. My Nashville is different than other people’s Nashville and that will likely be clear as we get into this.
I am not sure the world needs another Substack, but I do think adults need more places to share and talk about music. Music, like any art you are passionate about, gives our lives context, meaning, and purpose. We need those things now more than ever. The algorithm can’t help you find everything.
There is something unique about our culture that most people stop seeking out new music as they get older. I am hoping to give you suggestions to add to your own favorite playlists, new and old. I think seeking out and finding new sounds that speak to you can be a key part of connecting with others and staying young. Alternately if you are young, it’s a way to connect with people in other generations that are still open minded.
I also want to give a platform for live reviews, especially of local Nashville artists. There are so many amazing ones here that deserve to be seen and heard. Compared to other towns it’s easy to go to shows here. It’s not like La or Chicago where you have to drive 2 hours to see somebody that starts at 11 or later. In Nashville, you can see multiple shows at two different venues and still be home hanging with your dog by 10.

So please follow and comment. Let’s find common and uncommon ground and dig for music that inspires and makes us feel more connected to each other and ourselves.

Welcome! Brian here with a sighthound as well. Is that a greyhound or whippet? My wife and I have had two greys. When my band tours we always try to play East Nashville. We've played The Underdog and The 5 Spot. Have some great local friends as well like Nicki Bluhm and Lilly Hiatt. Looking forward to following along
